When Cov-19 has forced all the schools to be closed in-person learning, an 88-year old math teacher Delores Spencer, in Hampton, Virginia stepped up to tutor and help families around the world. In an interview with News 3, Delores Spencer said, “It’s been a wonderful experience to reach out to so many people. If I teach you how to do it, you can do it just as well as I can.” She added, “It’s go great when you see the light come on in their mind, they say, ‘Oh!’ And that’s when they got it.” During the epidemic, Delores Spencer and her godson, John Wilson III, bought her classroom skills to an online social media platform social media.
They used social media Live with “Mrs. Spencer’s Math Lab,” and tutored every Tuesday night sitting in her home in Hampton, Virginia. She has been teaching and tutoring for the past seven decades.
John Wilson III said, “We just try to simplify it. I often call it, math made simple.” Delores Spencer said, “My thing is emphasizing and understand the concepts, because that’s what transferable when you go to another level.” The 88-year old math teacher Delores Spencer became viral and since then the numbers keep adding up. Now she and Wilson have students from around the world, children from the United States and many other countries are watching her videos online.
Other teachers are also sharing her videos with each other and Delores Spencer’s videos have got 100,000 views so far. The teachers are saying, “Listen, this woman knows how to teach math.” Delores Spencer also has a YouTube channel, named “Mrs. Spencer’s Math Lab” and has 2.25k subscribers till now. In addition, when the schools re-open she also holds free Zoom meetings, to help the teachers and students returning to the classroom.
She said, “It is a transitional piece to say now we are moving from our virtual environment and now we are going to go back to in-person learning.” Delores Spencer is not planning to slow down anytime soon. At the age of 88, the age 88, is just a number for her. She continues to help and tutor more students around the world.
