MelRo, Melissa Roshan Potter never got a chance to attend a prom night. MelRo from Ohio grew in 23 foster care homes. At 16, Melissa was homeless and was pregnant through an as-sault. MelRo’s son Trey Potter was going to attend his high school prom night. The 18 year old Trey was clear who he wanted to take as his date for the prom night.
It was none other than his mother.
Trey told to WATE16 in Knoxville, Tennessee “she never had that experience and she’s risked so much for throughout my life and made so many sacrifices. I thought it would be the right thing to do.”
Melissa recalls people telling her that she won’t be able to raise Trey properly. She said “When I was pregnant with him, I heard, ‘Mel because you lived in the foster care system, you’re probably not going to raise a thriving individual. It just doesn’t happen. You can’t give him what you don’t have”.
Today MelRo has proved all of them wrong. MelRo is now an advocate for homeless and foster children. She shared her story for prom night on her Instagram page. The post read. “The time is here, I’m on my way to prom!” she says in a video. “You heard that right, my son actually invited me to be his prom date because I was pregnant with him when it was my prom time.”
For her son Trey, he wants to appreciate his mother for all that she has done for him. Trey said “I think it shows her how much I appreciate her cause I really do after all she’s been through and all I’ve been through with her,”.
