A young mother has shared the touching story about the moment a total stranger wrote her a check to help her baby boy with a cleft palate. Sara Heller, 26, of Omaha, Nebraska, discovered that her son would be born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate when she was 24 weeks pregnant. After she and her partner Chris Eidam, 30, dealt with the news, they decided to share their story – and that of their son’s – with the world to bring attention to his condition.
As part of this goal, Sara has regularly shared images of Brody on Instagram, both before and after his birth, attracting plenty of comments – not all of them kind. On one particular day, just before New Year’s Eve, Sara received a hurtful comment on a picture of her son on the social media site. ‘What’s wrong with his face?’ the stranger wrote.
Sara simply didn’t know how to respond, deleting the comment and attempting to get on with her day.
Within hours of dealing with the online troll, Sara was out for dinner with Brody and a few of her friends when she was receiver of a beautiful random act of kindness. At one point during their meal, the server at the restaurant came and handed Sara a folded napkin. She opened it, and found inside a check for $1,000. In the memo line, the generous stranger wrote: ‘For the beautiful baby.’ Sara told Today.com that the second she saw the check with its note: ‘Tears fell from my eyes immediately and the happiness my heart felt is indescribable.’
The family put the money towards Brody’s medical costs and, just days after the enc-ounter at the restaurant, Brody underwent operation on his lip. Luckily the check included the kind stranger’s address, where Sara sent a thank you note and pictures of Brody’s progress. After this second procedure, Brody is due for a third on his palate when he is between nine and 12 months old.
While eating is still a struggle – leaving Brody to rely on a gastrointestinal tube – the journey has shown the family just how strong of a support system there is out there for babies just like Brody. ‘The generosity of a complete stranger restored our faith in humanity,’ she said. ‘Being Brody’s parent has taught me that people care. Strangers all over the country want to hear his story, and they want to pray for him.’
