Homeless student is starving and has nowhere to go, then janitor asks him to open her ‘other’ closet – Video

Working at a school is unlike any other job whether you’re a teacher, nurse, guidance counselor or janitor. Because working with children means being a support for kids, including some who come from tough conditions and may have no one else to lean on. Just ask Carolyn Collins. Carolyn works as a janitor at Tucker High School in Georgia but that’s not what she’s really known for.

Two teens approached Carolyn. They wanted to share their story with someone they trusted, and Carolyn radiated security.

The children told her that they were homeless and hungry. They had nowhere else to go. After that meeting, Carolyn started a project that has turned into the perfect place to go for students in need of help. Carolyn set up a “Care Closet” at the school.

The Care Closet is a place where homeless children can get supplies to help them through life and school. Carolyn collects supplies and stores them in the small storage room. When a homeless or hungry student needs something, she opens the door and allows them to take whatever they need. Usually it’s some food or a bit of chocolate that helps most.

And this isn’t just a problem at Tucker High School, of course. In the United States alone, 1.2 million students were homeless between 2014 and 2015. That’s unimaginable. But thankfully, there are people out there like Carolyn who really make a difference. Every year, her closet helps support around 30 students and she pays for most of the supples out of her own pocket. If she’s not a hometown hero, I don’t know who is.
